Although well known for their work with Sega on games like OutRun 2 and Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing this is, surprisingly, their first original IP. If you miss the glory days of N64 era collectathons then the creators of Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing have got just the game for you. No enemies is fine, but the only goal in the game is to collect three sets of increasingly well-hidden collectables. It harkens back to a much early time when presenting you with a unique control system, and new skills to learn, wasn’t treated as a novelty – or an impediment to more casual gamers – but one of the principal pleasures of playing a new video game.
Pros: The set-up is amusingly novel and the controls work extremely well.

Controlling Noodle and working out how to navigate what, for any characters with legs, would be very simple obstacles is a huge amount of fun and very rewarding. And although the collectathon concept certainly goes hand-in-hand with 3D platformers it doesn’t feel like it provides enough structure for Snake Pass. These are the things that prevent Snake Pass from reaching classic status, but it’s still a hugely enjoyable and original game.
Camera and checkpoint system could be more helpful. It’s also the world’s most realistic snake simulator. This prevents you from falling off the edge of the world, but also alters the weight balance of your body for some of the trickier manoeuvres. Ah, the age of the 3D platformer. 1 player A unique, physics-based puzzle platform game, Snake Pass challenges players to ‘think like a snake’ as they tackle precarious puzzles as only a snake can.
And as one of the first to mine a new seam of retro gaming, it’s encouraging how well Sumo’s new ideas mix with the look and feel of the old.

The checkpoint system sets you too far back if you do come a cropper, and the camera often struggles to adapt to a character that sits so low to the ground and moves in such an odd fashion. But we’d be lying if we said that the game feels like all that it can be.
