One of the most beautiful hikes I’ve done in the fall. If you don't have time for the out and back trip you can use the busses between Snowmass Village and Aspen for free. The absolute perfect fall day hiking through the many aspen groves - all a golden yellow. Beautiful views at the observation deck, Alk by myself.

Excellent trail, but should be categorized as hard, not moderate. Easy trail. Pretty crowded with hikers, bikers and runners. Aspens everywhere!
2,037 photos. If you want to go on this, be sure to book the bus and/or parking in advance and arrive at bus station Early! The only challenge was getting reservation for bus to get there. Overall great loop to start your day. Not too busy! Go clockwise to climb in the shade of the trees, and then descend on the 4WD road, which is very sunny. There are some nice views along the way of surrounding mountains, rivers, and meadows.
Most of the signage was in the direction from Aspen to Snowmass so a couple of wrong turns but AllTrails helped us stay on track. Great autumn trail, took me through a bunch of aspen groves which is exactly what I wanted! We spent a good half hour getting back on trail where the maps told us we were on trail but there was no trail.

Hard trail run but great views. If you dont check in at bus station, you will get bumped from your reservation, leaving you in standby and possibly unable to get a ride there. Near Snowmass Village the ski resorts have moved the trail and the marking is pretty confusing. Trail is rough took us about two hours to drive the 10 miles to ruby but the views are totally awesome. Suggest starting early and going clockwise to avoid crowds hiking up the other side of smuggler’s. Mix of sun and shade.
We were staying in Aspen so we rode the bus to Snowmass and hiked back. Nice walk up! Aspen Chamber Resort Association Steep down and up for 1/4 mile then flat along the river. Not too many bikers, was alone a lot of my hike.
RE: parking, there is free 24 hour parking on Lone Pine Rd right near the trailhead. Very nice in the middle section where it is backcountry and you're not crossing ski slopes. Then hiked up to the ridgeline whuch made it every bit worth it!

Aspen has no shortage of world-class mountain biking trails, but, in most cases, there's a caveat: You have to climb anywhere from 800 feet to more than 2,000 feet to access them.
Otherwise very nice! Only downgraded a star because there were a ton of mountain bikers, most of whom had terrible trail etiquette.
