… I would rather give full vent to all human loves and disappointments, and take a chance on being corny, than die a smart—.”.

Legends of the Fall is what drew me to this read.

Susannah grabs her plate and her glass, and the Colonel his plate and the wine decanter.

In the next shot, when she talks to Isabell Two, the sun is shining again. When shooting the scene where Isabelle Two is shot and Tristan gets beat up by the policemen, the actor playing the policeman accidentally really hit Brad Pitt on the head with the baton, giving him a black eye.

Legends of the Fall was a novel written by Jim Harrison, which Later this week I’ll be sharing my full-year wrap-up for 2019 and my favorite discoveries of the year, but first, let’s take a look back at what I watched in December. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account.

The woman who would wait forever couldn't make it 2 or 3 years lol. It is vivid and violent, lurid and provocative, grand in scope but tiny in size. The amount of wine in the Colonel's new glass also varies from shot to shot measured by the decoration. Even more so when the blurb quotes NYT to say it "may well be the best set of novellas to appear in this country during the last quarter century". This book contains three novellas, the last one being the title story. When we return to the storage, the guy takes his hand to the cheek, but now there is much less blood than it was only a couple of seconds earlier, and it has not been wiped off. When he does, she commits suicide. This scene is intercut with a scene where Susannah cuts off a lock of her hair. The Colonel has a chalk board around his neck and he writes, "Am Happy." The beautiful old American West, the passionate love scenes, the bond of familial ties—these all mesmerize us yet also, in the end, collude to reveal any person seeking true joy in these things will feel sad and hollow.

… A lot of good fiction is sentimental. I like the form: these feel almost epic in scope, just not in length. There is no sense of immediacy here, of the present moment unfolding in any significant or meaningful way. I will continue to read Harrison's novellas until I've read them all, and I'll certainly read his novels as well.

I also loved the writing. I liked the first, skipped the second, loved Legends of the Fall, and was a bit perturbed by the simplistic portrayals of women (which were not, I think, intentional or self-conscious on Harrison's part). The review in The New York Times in 1979 read: “In ‘Legends of the Fall,’ the steady, singing, epic voice assures and reassures us that we are hearing—as the title claims—legend, not reality. Tristan broke my heart.

Tristan (Brad Pitt), the middle son, whose idea of entertainment is to awaken hibernating bears and cut out their still-beating hearts. Maybe that, along with patriotism, is involved in his decision to go to Canada and enlist when World War I breaks out. The boys are as different as can be. James Dean is so completely and utterly adorable.

Harrison's underrated as a stylist. And that third novella, Legends of the Fall, is insane. What a wonderful book to read! I guess it is difficult for a movie to live up to a first impression like that.

The mother is out of the picture, having left the ranch long ago. During the battle scene the voiceover says that it is February 1915.

The novel and the movie have many similarities, but also several differences. Every character is morbidly motivated, nursing a secret wound or strangling a sexy inner demon, and posed against pedantically art-directed backdrops – the oaken elegance of northern frontier wealth, the oil-lamp-lit parlors and river rock mantelpieces of the Cattleman's Club.

The movie is a showcase for acting, and in addition to Ormond and Hopkins, it also shows how strong Aidan Quinn and Brad Pitt are, in roles that have inescapable parallels to the Rock Hudson and James Dean characters in "Giant."

Every single romantic relationship in the story is inherently flawed, save for perhaps Tristan’s brief marriage to Isabel Two. It's rare you go in with high expectations and end up turning the book over, again and again, to check if you really are reading the book you set out to do. LOL! When his father treats a few seconds later the sleeve is intact again and the wound seems to be on his chest.
