5. Meerkats are adapted to living in desert conditions. In captivity, however, their lifespan can increase to 13 or so years. It possesses a long, thick tail and short hair, which sets it apart from other mongooses.
These burrows consist of complex channels that lead to sleeping chambers. They also have a tail that is approximately 9.8 inches long, which is slender and tapers to a reddish or black colored pointed tip. They are constantly looking over their offspring, and young meerkats are the first to be protected in the case of an attack. A few will typically serve as lookouts, watching the skies for birds of prey, such as hawks and eagles, that can snatch them from the ground. All family members engage in play, grappling and wrestling with each other, which helps establish an individual’s position in the hierarchy peacefully. They stand watch for over an hour, making regular peeping noises to let the group know that there is no current danger. Meerkat habitat includes grassland, shrubland (areas in which the main vegetation is small, woody plants), savanna (areas with widely-spaced trees) and desert. While the group is outside, one or more meerkats will act as a sentry, keeping a look out for approaching danger. It lives in colonies that typically consist of around 30 individuals (although groups consisting of between 3 and 50+ meerkats are known).
